Every artist creates for exactly the same and completely different reasons. I love when these grand motivations, complex philosophies, and novel approaches can be effectively communicated with a simple quote. In this series, I will share some of my favorite art quotes that I’ve found interesting or memorable. A few have even changed the way I think about… everything.
I hope you find them worth contemplating not only in your creative pursuits but in all walks of life.
Without further ado:
‘If we could understand and clearly define everything about art, it would cease to be art’.
-Alex Grey
Alex Grey is a master draughtsman, mythical-level psychedelic artist, wizardly spiritual mystic, guru, sculptor, and it is even rumored that he is half-lizard. Wouldn’t surprise me, the guy is truly something. Surprisingly calm voice for a lizard which pairs well with his riveting story of dedication to the arts— to the journey of self-discovery, of creation and destruction. His words are a refreshing tonic amidst this world where it feels like we measure everything. (money, likes, materials, network, and my favorite: engagement) His book The Mission of Art is a beautiful read.
‘Only by going too far do you go anywhere at all’
-Francis Bacon
I thought I would juxtapose the gentle, spiritual Grey with the scarred perspective of the ruthless, raw, tactical UK wonderboy, Francis Bacon. I’ll never forget viewing ‘Painting 1946’ at the MOMA, it struck me still. I felt swirling in me feelings of being drawn to his dark world, to tragedy, hedonism, the thrill of sinning, and the agony of death. I would say he had a sort of gift for portraying pain and its blunt ubiquity across the human experience. I’ve always admired his work since, and his career serves as both a monument and a warning for anyone who dares eat the forbidden fruit.
Abe. Great start. Enjoyed your use of simple sayings that are full of complex possibilities. Looking forward to your creation
